D3: The Corner Shop: Museum Meets City

Original description: The local food shops in Antwerp (Belgium) have been part of the daily life of every one, whether consumer or passer-by, from the 1950s till today. To explore how these food shops are maintained in practice, the MAS museum started the participatory project The Corner Shop with an array of partners. At the core of the project a team of volunteers explored three districts in Antwerp with a different socio-economical profile. Their findings were turned into several presentations: at the museum, in the city and online.

For its participatory projects, the MAS invests strongly in in-depth collaboration with a range of individuals, groups and communities to create common ground. During this workshop, Sofie De Ruysser will lead you through the start-up steps of these participatory processes.

Results / lessons learned

1.WHAT IS YOUR IDENTITY? WHAT ARE GAPS (IN COLLECTION) AND OPPORTUNITIES? GO BEYOND!

The MAS actively connects to its surroundings and strives to collect multiple perspectives on the collection by engaging people from the neighbourhood into conversation about the collection. In this process, new connections arise between (parts of) the collection and people. Through participation and research with and by the broad (potential) audience the museum collection is enriched. This leads to new and surprising exhibitions.

2.EMPOWER CITIZENS AND ORGANISATIONS NETWORK TAKE TIME: TRUST & TRANSLATE

Enlarging and strengthening a network between the citizens and organizations in Antwerp takes time. It is important to trust that this network is meaningful for your museum and helps to enrich your own perspective on your collection which you can translate to exhibitions that give meaning to your surroundings.

3.ANCHOR THE PROJECTS IN YOUR REGULAR ORGANISATION PROCESS VS RESULT
